Considering the recent situation in the Maldives, the Tourism Crisis Management Office (GGCT) has issued a Level 2 Travel Alert to that destination. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese Consulate in Maldives have also issued a security alert. Following is the translated version of the full text:

“Alerts chinese citizens not to travel to the Maldives during this period

(This alert is valid until 28th of February 2018)

Recently, large protests have taken place in the Maldives' capital, Male. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and the Consulate of China in Maldives reminds Chinese citizens to closely follow as the situation develops and not to travel to the Maldives during this period. It is recommended to cancel travel plans to the said country should these have already been made. In case of an emergency, Chinese citizens should contact immediately the police and the Chinese Consulate for assistance.

Given the special circumstances of the destination in question, if Chinese citizens insist on traveling to that country after this alert is issued, they may be exposed to a high security risk, be subjected to delays in receiving any assistance as well as possibly incurring high personal expenses due to the delay in assistance.

Maldives Police: 119;

Global Emergency Call Center for Consular Protection and Services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs 24-hour hotline: +86 10 12308 or +86-10-59913991;

The GGCT alerts Macao residents who intend to travel to or are already in that country to reconsider their current travel plans. It is suggested to avoid non-essential travel to the destination.

The GGCT will keep monitoring the latest developments of the situation.

From information gathered through the Macao travel industry, currently no requests for assistance were received from Macao residents. Until the present moment, GGCT has not received any request for information or assistance.

If necessary, Macao residents can call:

The Chinese Embassy and consulates or the Global Emergency Call Center for Consular Protection and Services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs 24-hour hotline: +86 10 12308 for assistance.
